One of the things I’m often asked is

“What is your story? How did you get started?”

My life

I was born in Victoria, Australia in 1991. A typical Australian upbringing ensured a healthy appetite for sport and recreation. Throughout my childhood, I was surrounded by sport and competition. Several of my family members were active woodcutting competitors - something I emulated in my teenage years, eventually rising to state champion and excelling at the highest levels in international competitions.

Growing up, I was always thinking about how things worked, which provided aspirations to become a mechanical engineer. However, the passions for sports, and in particular the increase in sport performance, provided a new inspiration - becoming a strength coach.

Strength

My first exposure to strength training was in my father’s garage at age 13, with no more guidance than the Joe Weider programs in poster on the walls. My initial training yielded success, and by the age of 14 I completed a 145KG deficit deadlift – however, my form left a lot to be desired, something I became a stickler for in later years!

Knowing that I needed to become more knowledgeable to continue making results, I looked to the internet for inspiration. In the early 2000s, social media wasn’t around, and strength training information was provided primarily in the form of websites and forums. Through pages such as bodybuilding.com, and more scientifically, Tnation, I discovered articles from a whole host of coaches. However, it was one coach specifically that sparked my intense interest in strength training, Charles Poliquin

Charles was different to the other coaches. He had experience with athletes in summer and winter olympic sports, bodybuilders and executives. But it was more than that. Charles talked about standardizing tempo, using a 4- digit descriptive. He talked about manual therapy, electrotherapy, gut health, and blood profiles. At a time when most coaches were still starting to use creatine, Charles had his own line of supplements. He had developed his own, innovate method of body fat testing to assess hormonal function, along with a system to diagnose muscular function and balance.

A New Calling

Charles opened my eyes to what it meant to be a good coach. My interest was solidified into a professional calling, and in 2009, at age 17, I enrolled in an undergraduate Exercise Science degree, minoring in Sports Coaching. In 2011 I attended my first professional development course – Active Release Techniques – a soft tissue treatment method Charles helped develop with creator Mike Leahy, becoming Australia’s youngest practitioner at age 20. Within the next 6 years I had taken more than 35 professional development courses around Australia and Internationally, gaining a reputation as one of the most intelligent and well-rounded coaches in the area of program design and periodization.

Post university, I co-built one of central Victoria’s best equipped performance facility, opening doors in 2015. Servicing both Athletes and general Population clients, I had the opportunity to work with hundreds of clients, training everyone from office workers to Australian record holders in Powerlifting, and treating thousands of musculoskeletal issues, from car crash injuries to World Champion Cyclists.
